A Little History

The Rod And Staff Foundation is an educational foundation helping provide the reasonable and prudent resources necessary to support graduate level second career seminary students preparing for service in Lutheran church settings. The Foundation was chartered as a non-profit corportaion in the State of Georgia on January 2, 2008. Work began immediately to assemble the first Board of Directiors, including both Lutherans and interested persons of other Christian identities. Legal documents and seeking IRS 501.c.3 status were immediate necessities. The Board approved descriptions of the Foundation's activity, methodology and operational details, as well as processes for undertaking our stated ministry objectives.

Through the process we were advised and counseled by a Lutheran attorney well versed in charitable and educational foundations, and with a background in cooperative Lutheran social service ministries.

By the Fall of 2008 it became obvious that the economic environment of the country was going to adversely affect our organizing for ministry. Action was taken to enlarge and diversify the Board's membership.

During 2008 we were able to fund one seminary course for a selected seminarian. In 2009 (and beyond), we have been engaged in building the Foundation's resources along with seminarian support. During the 2011-12 academic year we were able to help support two selected seminarians.

Many ways were announced for individuals to partner with the Foundation in ministry. In addition to financial partnership, there are opportunities for sharing time and abilities as a Board Members, in areas such as graphic arts, website development and maintenance, sharing printed information with friends and associates, and speaking on behalf of the Foundation, to name a few.
